I was heading back home from breakfast yesterday when I saw two beefy city pigeons pecking the hell out of one another on the walkway before me. The battle was quick and ruthless. I pulled back at the *fwoop, fwoop* sounds as these two (pardon me) feather-loads battered each other with their wings and cut at one another's throats with their sharp pigeon bills. In the event that I were a little, pigeon-cherishing youngster I'm certain it would have made me cry.
As I watched these dim mottled heroes jump at one another for cycle 2, I pondered, would could it have been that might have caused such an awe-inspiring pigeon prize battle? An unwanted slice of rural artesian bread? The warm gestures of an especially attractive female pigeon? The miserable acknowledgment that these pigeons were, fail, pigeons, bound to live short and unimportant pigeon lives?
At the end of the day, there must be a valid justification that these pigeons were out of nowhere going for the throat. . .didn't there? Didn't there?
At long last the battle severed and the two pigeons (the dim one on the left and the . . .blunder . . .dim one on the right) sent off themselves back high up and settled onto the shade of the grocery store. I got the attention of one of them as he fluttered his direction up and what I saw there made sense of everything.
